Crab Kong vs. Crabzilla: Japanese B-movie-style

British sealife experts are bracing for a Japanese B-movie-style showdown for the title of the UK’s biggest crustacean: Crab Kong vs. Crabzilla.
The challenger for the crown, a Japanese spider crab dubbed “Crab Kong” and described as the “Ronaldo” of the aquarium world, arrived at Weymouth’s Sea Life Park earlier this month after being caught by fishermen in Suruga Bay, southeast of Tokyo.
Crab Kong already has claws spanning three metres (10 ft) and weighs in at 15 kilograms (33 lbs). That puts it in the same division as Crabzilla, currently the UK’s biggest crab which was imported by Birmingham’s National Sealife Centre last year. Both creatures are still growing and could live for more than 100 years.
Robin James, a biologist at the Sea Life Park, had visited the village where Crab Kong was caught and arranged for it to be transported to the UK. It will be moved to a permanent home at Munich’s Sea Life centre later this year.
“Getting in an animal as impressive as Crab Kong is the aquarium equivalent of signing Ronaldo,” James said.
“Giving people a chance to witness first hand one of the many wonders of the deep oceans helps boost support for marine conservation.” he said.
